In a surprising move, live streaming all the matches of Indian Premier League (IPL) would be broadcast live on YouTube all across the world. On January 21, 2010 The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had a two year exclusive deal with YouTube owned Google for live streaming of IPL season 3 matches. This is eventually the first time a sporting event will be broadcast live on the Internet.
Sony Entertainment and Sony Set Max owned by Multi Screen Media Pvt Ltd has an whooping 10 year telecast deal signed with BCCI for $1.26 billion, a leading channel who will broadcast IPL matches in TV, also gave a green signal to YouTube live IPL matches.
The deal with Internet giant Google is not through a final fee, instead its a revenue sharing arrangement under which Google will share certain revenue what it generate through YouTube live just like Google Adsense.
Not only you can watch live streaming of videos online in YouTube live also you have option to see the action replies, change camera positions, freezing, fast forwarding and many more. So this would be not just like out normal Youtube videos but it would be much more than it.
Seems to be interesting move by both giants, Google is Internet giant and BCCI is the richest club in the world among all the sports. With this YouTube would like to grow its Indian market which comprises only of 10 millions users to almost double as YouTube believes that there are very less users who visits YouTube in India and secondly IPL season would break the last records of 125 millions unique viewers for IPL’s second season. IPL season was watched by 102 million and IPL season two was watched by 125 millions unique users. So showing live YouTube matches would also attract lots of Internet users to tune and have a live broadcast before their monitor screen for free at their internet charges. Max executive vice president Sneha Rajani said that they are targeting around 400 millions unique viewers this season of IPL.
IPL chairman Lalit Modi (changed now) said that it was always in mind to take IPL to global audiences and make aware of cricket among the nations who doesn’t even have heard of this name.
