This is possible with a Google Chrome extension called Google Mail Checker. Google Mail Checker displays the number of unread messages in your Google Mail inbox just beside the address bar. Also you can click on the button to open your inbox to check those unread message which means that you need not again go address bar and type gmail.com.
Its also automatically updates itself as you check your mails from time to time.
