Google Earth and Google Maps both offers the same features but as you see more in the broader prospective both the terms are not exactly the same, they differs in certain parameters of the features offered by them. The updates are same for both the product of Google and it also shows the same information every time but still they have certain things which separate them and so might have Google has assigned them different names.

1. Google Earth is an computer downloadable program which needs to be installed and then run whereas Google Maps in viewable in windows of your browser.
2. Google Earth provides a better satellite imagery and accuracy since its resolution doesn’t depends on the capabilities of your browsers whereas Google Maps is completely dependent on your browser.
3. In Google Earth you can have you own maps drawn so called my maps.
So choose which is best suitable for you and go ahead with that, i.e., if you are using maps more often and always want to make you own maps then go ahead with Google Earth and download the latest version of it.

Now i understand why google have to make another application after they had the google map earlier. I used to take advantage of google map before, But now, I am most comfortable using Google Earth since it is more graphical. Google earth is a beautiful platform. Not like the Google maps, but the difference lies in the way we use them. I use maps when I need directions to go from a place to the other.
